Zinc

Zinc Flake

Zinc flake is a lamellar (flake-shaped) zinc pigment produced from high-purity zinc ingots (>99.99%) through atomization of molten zinc, followed by wet ball milling, vacuum drying, and polishing. The unique flake geometry provides a high specific surface area and excellent barrier protection properties. When applied as a coating, zinc flakes overlap to form a dense, conductive layer that provides cathodic corrosion protection to steel substrates, even in thin films. Zinc flake coatings are non-electrolytically applied and are widely used in high-strength steel fasteners where hydrogen embrittlement is a concern. The product is typically supplied as a dry powder and is compatible with both solvent-borne and water-borne coating systems.

SAFETY & HANDLING

Safety & Handling

General Safety Guidelines

Zinc flake is classified as a flammable solid. Dust may be flammable, and dust clouds may form explosive mixtures with air. The substance is water-reactive and moisture-sensitive, and may be pyrophoric (spontaneously flammable in air) in certain forms. It causes skin irritation and serious eye irritation. May cause respiratory irritation. May cause drowsiness or dizziness. May be fatal if swallowed and enters airways. Toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Wear protective gloves, protective clothing, and eye/face protection. Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray. Wash skin thoroughly after handling. Keep away from heat, hot surfaces, sparks, open flames, and other ignition sources. No smoking. Keep container tightly closed. Ground and bond container and receiving equipment. Use explosion-proof electrical/ventilating/lighting equipment. Use non-sparking tools. Take action to prevent static discharges.

General Emergency Guidelines

Eye Contact

Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing. If eye irritation persists, get medical advice/attention.

Skin Contact

Wash with plenty of soap and water. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. If skin irritation occurs, get medical advice/attention.

Inhalation

Move person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If symptoms persist, call a physician.

Ingestion

Do NOT induce vomiting. Rinse mouth. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention immediately.

Spillage

Avoid dust formation. Use non-sparking tools and explosion-proof equipment. Collect spillage in closed containers. Do not allow product to enter drains, watercourses, or soil. Prevent release to the environment.

Fire

Use a dry powder, dry sand, or carbon dioxide (CO₂) extinguisher. Do NOT use water. Do NOT use foam. In case of fire, evacuate the area and fight the fire from a safe distance.
